American Express One of the Best Global Brands
American Express jumped a notch from #15 to #14 in the fourth annual ranking of the "100 Best Global Brands" by BusinessWeek and Interbrand, a leading brand consultancy. The ranking rewards companies that "build communities around their products and services to
create a 'cult brand' that enables customers to feel as if they own the brand." Companies topping the list included Coca Cola, Microsoft, IBM, GE, and Intel. Other findings included: reflecting a recovering global economy, overall brand values have risen 2.2%. (According
to the ranking, American Express' brand value rose 5%.)

Vitebsk resident Sergey Lyakhovich is currently being considered as the likeliest candidate to fight the famous Ukrainian heavyweight Vladimir Klitchko, brother of world’s #1 Vitaly Klitchko.
After Chris Berd refused to fight the Ukrainian, there emerged the candidacy of a Belarusian. At present, Sergey takes the 10th place in IBF rating. Some sources allege that there had already been arranged a preliminary agreement that the two will fight on April 23 in Germany.

On Friday, February 25 the Russian TV audience voted for a Belarusian singer Natalia Podolskaya to represent Russia at Eurovision-2005 contest. Natalia won the first place in the selection tournament “Eurovision-2005. Russia chooses”, broadcasted by the Russian First Channel.

Famous Belarusian skater Anzhelika Kotyuga took second place in the overall World Cup record, BELTA quotes deputy chairman of the directorate of national teams Anatoly Ivanov as saying.
On the last day of events in the Dutch Herenven, our skater won the 500m race, covering the distance in 38,18sec. Thanks to this outstanding performance she took the second place in World Cup this year, losing only to a Chinese athlete Van Manli.

| SYMAN WINS HIS FIRST BIATHLON WC GOLD |

A 27-year old Belarusian shooting skier Alexander Syman won a gold medal in a 10km sprint race, held on February 16, on the very first day of biathlon competitions in Slovenian Pokluka.
This is his first ever gold at the World Cup event. The official site of the International Biathlon Federation called his victory unexpected. Syman covered the distance in 24min55,6sec, closing all ten targets at two shooting ranges.

The national Belarusian soccer team yesterday defeated in an away friendly their Polish rivals 3:1. The first goal was scored on the 8th minute by the halfback of the German Stuttgart Alexander Gleb. The Poles scored back soon after the start of the second half, but in the last ten minutes Belarusians in the persons of Vyacheslav Gleb and Andrei Lavrik scored twice more to claim final victory.

On February 5 in Las Vegas (Nevada, USA) there ended the world championship on fighting without rules. For the first time in the history of our country the champion’s heavyweight title was claimed by a Belarusian national – 26-year old Andrei Orlovsky (height 192, weight 109). Next week Andrei will return home from the States.

| STAR FALL OVER BELARUS IN FEBRUARY |

ATN news agency reports that starting from today Belarusians will be able to watch falling stars from the constellation of Deva – meteor stream Virginidy. At first stage they will hardly be noticeable from Earth. However, starting from February 5 one will be able to see a more powerful phenomenon – the Delta-Leonidas asteroid stream. The origin of such streams remains a mystery for the scholars. Some tend to believe that these are the former comets, which gradually collapse as they approach the sun.

| “SILICHI” SKI RESORT OPENS NEAR MINSK |

The national mountain ski resort “Silichi” opened on January 29 in the Logoisky district of Minsk region. Over the past two years there have been built three sports objects in the Logoisk district, including the “Silichi” ski resort, the sports recreation base (in early 2004) and the biathlon base “Zayachya Polyana”. According to the official data, the Logoisk sports institutions donated to the district’s budget over 150mln rubles.
NOTE. The rent of sports equipment in “Silichi” costs 32thsd rubles ($14) a day.

Belarus and Uzbekistan signed an intergovernmental agreement on mutual visa-free travel of citizens. The document was ratified in course of the January 17-20 visit to Uzbekistan of deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus Alexander Gerasimenko.
